and I got into a weird position while trying to get it from under there, and I ended up dislocating my shoulder and I may have torn my rotator cuff.

According to the doctor in the ER, since this isn't the first time I dislocated my shoulder (3rd time on the right arm), this is a big deal. I didn't know dislocating your shoulder was that big of a deal.

you're likely looking at reconstruction down the line. Good luck man.

So, what sort of doctor are you? Orthopedic?

They said I can't come back to work (since I work in the same hospital), until I get cleared by an orthopedic surgeon and have had done some MRI's.

Internal Med. I see a fair number of these sort of complaints in the office, and refer to ortho for reconstruction.

yeah, esp if you do manual labor. They don't want you ruining your shoulder further on their watch.

That sucks. Surgery for you my friend!! I was in the same boat:

Dislocate knee at age 21...go to hospital: them: Wear this splint you'll be fine!

Dislocate knee age 24: Go to hospital them: Ohhhhhh That's not too good, here's 12 weeks of physio and we're setting you up for surgery

Age 26: Get surgery. 12 more weeks of physio....

Cardiology, however I'm content doing what I do now. Naturally with medicine, you practice as your training allows. General Internists deal with everything, and while i suppose you could practice general cardiology with just an Internists training, you won't get much business. It would be like hiring a general handyman to do complex plumbing. While the general handyman COULD do the work, it really needs the attention of a specialist.

Alright, so about six years ago (I was 14) I shattered my lower humerus. Badly, as you can see. I also had a complication; a bone spur grew and severed my triceps tendon. You can see the anchors they put in to fix that, in a later operation.

Three surgeries later, I'm ok. The metal's been pulled out, and I only lost about 5-10% of my mobility, which is apparently pretty good(?).

My question: how do you think this will affect me long term? There's some residual scar tissue and it still crackles and pops, so I'm worried that this might flare up or get worse down the road. It's been years since I've seen a doctor about it, by the way.

Do you think it'll be an issue? Should I go back and get a second opinion?

Thanks for reading this whole thing, haha.

given that you have abnormal anatomy, i would err on the side of likely. No real way to prevent bone spurs, esp since your periostium is now compromised due to hardware. Id say keep an eye on it, and if things start taking a turn, don't hesitate to see someone.

25 years of school gives you a fair amount of time to figure your life out while your friends are getting married, having kids, and starting their lives/careers.

as far as I know, (remember I'm not an orthopod), there isn't any real good way of predicting them. Like i said though, given that you had hardware, the bone in the area is likely going to be slightly abnormal and have a higher rate of remodeling to compensate. Remodeling bone means that it builds up then shapes down based on stresses and inflammation. That process can be slightly disorganized, giving you bone spurs. If you continue to have inflammation in the area, you are more prone to bone spur development.

It rarely flares up, but like I said earlier it crackles and pops constantly. It definitely feels like there's still some stress in there. That mean anything?

id make sure to see a specialist. An NP or PA may see you, but they won't be all that helpful if you've got an abnormal knee.
